Many an intrepid Antipodean who has spent some time travelling the globe has commented on the way Melbourne resembles the European aesthetic. In particular, the grey, grey city of London. So it comes as no surprise to find that Melbourne-based designer, Amanda McCarthy, modelled and named her clothing line after a thriving street in the heart of Shakespeare’s ol’ home-town. And thus Leonard Street was born.
A girl after our own heart, Amanda is a big fan of colour and a decent print. With a background in Sculpture and Fine Art from Monash University, the line of each piece is the starting point in McCarthy’s design process, followed by fabrication for form and structure and then lastly palette and print. The result is a collection of more-than-flattering garments that have a strong feel for construction made in exquisite fabrics with unusual and strong colour palettes and bespoke prints, unique for each season. Also, Amanda does most of the print design by hand in her coast studio, which has recently relocated to a lovely spot by the coast.
Leonard Street’s current Autumn Winter collection is everything you would expect from a Melbourne based London inspired label – chunky wools, a raincoat that is edgier than most tailored jackets, and printed leggings. But that is just the beginning. Add to that a collection of coats, printed dresses, and a whole range of accessories including some truly cute beanies and winter’s shopping is said and done!
