Wokkin’ Out At Chinatown Street Markets

Oct 22, 2015  ·  2 min read

By Stephanie Manning…

Taste your way through Asia without leaving the Gold Coast every first Saturday of the month from 4–10pm. Let your senses soak up the surroundings when Chinatown transforms into a colourful and vibrant marketplace bursting with dumplings, buns and exotic wok creations from China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines. You’re hungry aren’t you?

Taking over the streets, the late night markets create an electric energy filled hot pot with live entertainment, cuisine showcases, interactive cooking demonstrations and roaring cultural celebrations that change with the season. The Chinatown Street Markets are set to put culture back into the streets, right in the heart of the Gold Coast’s Southport CBD.

You want an insider tip? Hit the Filipino Shop located in Chinatown and get stuck into the drool-worthy charcoal grilled pork belly barbecue (skewers), lechon (roasted pig on a spit), kakanin (native delicacies) and for those with woks full of culinary courage, the balut (hard boiled fertilised duck egg). Don’t go soft now… a dash of soy sauce and down the hatch!

Other crowd favourites include the crispy crocodile karaage, the Korean sweet pancakes and the vitamin-rich and surprisingly refreshing pressed sugarcane juice.

How to get there: From QT Gold Coast we recommend jumping on the tram and riding the ‘G’ all the way to Southport Station, Nerang Street, Southport.
