How To Chill On A Sunday

Jan 21, 2016  ·  4 min read

By Thomas Souness.

Stay cool, bird boy” – If you know where that quote is from, you’re doing life right.

…or wrong, I don’t know. It’s a matter of perspective; unlike the undisputable fact that chill Sundays are a blissful gift that should be taken advantage of at every opportunity. So to help you out on your next one, here are some sweet ideas for chillin’ on the Goldy.

Breakfast

The most important meal of the day is sometimes outweighed by the importance of sleeping in, and that’s totally okay. There are some seriously great breakfast venues on the Gold Coast (*cough* Bazaar), but too often they pack up shop on a Sunday just as you’re ready to take those first caffeine-deprived steps out of bed. Our recommendation would be heading down to a classic Sunday market. In this case our recommendation is the Bundall Farmers’ Markets at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Only a five minute drive inland from Surfers Paradise, Bundall Farmers’ Markets regularly hosts over 80 different stallholders selling a wide and ever-changing variety of culinary temptations. Best of all? They’re open until 11:30am… Plenty of time for an early surf… or to catch up on that beauty sleep…. Or to sleep off the hang over.

Day Activities

It can be a little difficult to narrow down Gold Coast activities, given there are just so many. However at this time of year, I think two options stand above the rest.

S.U.P.ing

If you haven’t been Stand Up Paddle Boarding yet, I’d highly recommend it. Don’t be deterred by a balancing-board sport. For a casual paddle, it’s easy and not nearly as physically intensive as you might think. Picture paddling slowly down the Currumbin Creek, wildlife everywhere you look, the sounds of waves in the distance, and that warm summer sun cascading down on you.

Pretty blissful, and also pretty cheap. We recommend Gold Coast SUP at a mere $10 per hour.

Ice Skating

Of course, the single most chill activity you could undertake in a warm climate would be indoor ice skating. If you’re staying at QT, this might be perfect for you. The Paradise Resort is located (literally) just across the road, and boasts a 60 person capacity ice skating rink which is open to the public all year round.

Evening

If all that extraordinarily chill fun hasn’t worn you out (not likely) some relaxing Sunday arvo ideas will be music to your ears…

Burleigh Bongos

Hippies… the most chill people on the planet. You know that’s true. You can try to argue that point, but you already know they’re too chill to argue back. This carefree community of hippies and hippy-curious gather in the centre of Justin’s Park, Burleigh Heads every Sunday from 5pm.

Join in, or sit back and enjoy the show, this communal weekly even features an oft-staggeringly large bongo circle which provides an audial primal atmosphere to let your weekly worries slip away as you shrug off the stress and immerse yourself in an environment bursting at the seams with new-age spiritual culture.

Oh, we forgot to mention the fire twirling. …‘Nuff said.

Live Music

If bongo beats aren’t quite your thing, we’d like to recommend the Broadbeach Tavern: Sounds of Sunday GC.

I know, I know… “Tavern”. It’s a dirty word. This particular tavern however, goes from sleepy coastal pub to hipster haven every Sunday night from 6pm onwards. Tired of the same old Cold Chisel cover band in every Aussie pub? This is your retreat. With fresh artists and original music being the name of the game, Sounds of Sunday GC is a must-do for anyone who appreciates good tunes and a solid Sunday-sesh.

Last But Not Least

Don’t forget these two important tips:

  1. Sundays are usually the best night to score a cheap room-rate at QT.
  2. Waking up to a Bazaar breakfast is the best way to minimise your chance of punching a co-worker as you head back to work on Monday.

So there you have it. Your next Sunday has been planned, and it’s going to be awesome. Happy chilling!
